Charities are facing budget cuts so large that the only charity left will be what you find at home. If you want something to survive, you have to fight for it:
What happens when a D/deaf charity loses funding? It has to fight for other funding or become extinct.
Every time funding is reduced there are more people fighting
for the honeypot. An added snag? The honeypot has also shrunk.
“I know,” says Joe “Let’s
put the deaf Sign Language Users with the hard-of-hearing people. They’re all the same. It’s hearing isn’t it?”
Er, no, is not.” Says the charity. “Sign Language users spend money on
interpreters. Hard-of-hearing people
need lip-speakers. Both only need them for
important meetings, social occasions and buying from any shop that does not
have every size and colour of every product on its shelves.”
“I’m sure they can all learn to live with it. We all have to make sacrifices.”
“Joe, yours isn’t communication.”
“Good point, what can I do?”
“Talk to the charities that deal in deafness and hearing issues, Joe. If you can’t get a consensus because of some weird idea that they are competing with each other, then gather
information from a website like this and talk to us, talk to the deaf community. You know why? They're going to have to share their pot."
"Might make them sit up and take notice."
"Meantime, Joe, the money that folds goes further yet charities are open-minded and accept all sorts."
