If you've chosen to have a hearing-aid, you’ll know about what we call Silt In The River .   I say 'chosen' because some people struggle all their lives with a hearing issue when it's not necessary!  Hearing-aids are currently free on the NHS, 'currently' being the operative word.  We always say that you may as well get your hearing checked like your teeth and your eyes.   You paint your house every 5 years right?  Same thing; it's just body maintenance!

When you have a hearing-aid it is still possible to miss things.  They might need turning up or turning down.  Insist on one with a volume control.  The ones without volume control?  What is that?  Do we live in bubbles?  Hearing test in a soundproofed room?  How daft.  Sorry, but it's only for the scientist to get a 'perfect' result. 

Excuse me, do we all live in a soundproofed room?  We are sandwiched between the US and France in the nicest possible way.  Both of those countries do hearing tests where there is background noise.  They know there is no getting away from it unless you are in the know;)  Hearing-aid wearers can cut background noise by using a hearing loop :)  Now that's lucky!

Two years ago when I mentioned hearing tets in background noise to Hearing-Aid Audiologists at a conference they were surprisingly interested.  That's because they are independent and not subject presumably to doctrine that might go on in the public sector.  They are members of BSHAA (mouthful alert - British Society of Hearing Aid Acousticians).  Watch out as the bigger companies are subscribed to BSHAA and they sell hearing-aids by the bucket.  Independent guys are looking after your hearing.  Yes, you can buy an aid off them if you need it, but the focus is different.  It's on you and your hearing.  If you're missing bits of conversation or ends of words, why would you miss out on life?
