Tinnitus Triggers

You cannot catch tinnitus and you are not infectious if you have it. It is a condition that affects you to different degrees depending on your physical and emotional makeup, whether it is in the family, your general wellbeing. It is far from being simplistic. Here are the causes.

NOISE – Exposure to loud noises and that can happen once or over a lifetime. Lorry drivers are susceptible if they drive with the windows down and office workers if you sit near a noisy printer, they run at approximately 80 dB and you should limit your exposure to that. Check with your company’s Health & Safety person; they are there to make your life easier.

TRAUMA – It is very rare yet tinnitus can be triggered by a blow to the head,

DRUGS – Many prescription drugs list tinnitus as a side effect. In the US, side effects take up two sides of A5 information in a packet of tablets. Current thinking is that tinnitus can be triggered by certain medicines. In 99% of medicines there is an alternative that you can take. Your GP will help. As more people tell Doctors about tinnitus, they will become aware that it does exist and you are not imaginng noises in your head. .

STRESS

We need it as a survival mechanism when a cyclist hurtles towards us. However if you live constantly in a stressful job, unresolved emotional issues or you have had an argument with your other half, it might be louder. Give yourself some time to do something you want and don’t tell me you are a mother and do not have stress. Running a family can be the most stressful and the most rewarding job.

Remedies are designed to cure from within. How weird is that? It is talking about giving yourself a day off or aholiday to recuperate. Join Hearing Tips for more tips on tinnitus.

STRESS – anxiety and traumatic events – ringing, whistling, whooshing, rushing or roaring of a waterfall - hypothalmus

SINUS – thickening of mucous in the inner ear leads to a build-up of pressure in the ear. Ear infections are not a cause of tinnitus but taking courses of antihistamines or antibiotics to clear them can trigger this type of tinnitus.

MENIERS DISEASE

Meniers is a balance disorder. The balance organs are located deep inside the ears

It is very rare and must be diagnosed by a professional audiologist. Usually you would be referred to the hospital. M. Meniers was French. See our article ‘Hearing Pioneers Are Crazy’ to see scientists still trying to find a cure. There are lots of things to try so that its level drops.

TINNITUS AND HEARING IMPAIRMENT

Maybe one triggers the other. About 40% of people with a hearing impairment also have tinnitus. It may not bother you. If it does, we can help. Tinnitus Ted is on the site: a portable comforter. Most of all you are in a growing number of people who have it. If it is affecting your life, ask for a referral to your local Tinnitus Clinic which will be attached to your local hospital. Tinnitus groups were developed in Hampshire by a community interest company called Sensory Direct. It is no longer trading yet t we believe their efforts caused the hospitals to think about helping more people with tinnitus. You may as well ask if there is a clinic in your area. It is the only way to raise awareness of what can be a difficult issue.
